LTspice
LTspice (formerly SwicherCad) is a SPICE based circuit simulator. The binary version can be downloaded without charge at Linear Technologies. Linux users can run it using WINE.
As I am using LTspice for hobby and educational (myself) purposes extensively, I have collected some more devices and device parameters that are not distributed with the original version.
There is a forum at Yahoo, but registration at Yahoo requests your birthday values. While I could clearly enter wrong numbers, I currently did not register there.
Configuration tweaks
If you prefer the European format for resistors, you may either use the EuropeanResistor as a component, found under misc. Or you can copy it to the sym direcctory, rename res.asy to res-US.asy and the EuropeanResistor.asy to res.asy.

A graph for a variable capacitor. Note that this is just an ordinary capacitor for simulations.
A graph for a analog Meter. For simulations, it is just a resistor.

Some model data is very terse; it is just to draw a schematic with these.

SVG-Converter
To use the schematics e.g in Wikipedia, I am writing a converter from the LTspice .asy format to SVG. It was surprisingly quick to allow working for me.
Here is a preliminary (proof of concept) hack written in AWK; I use it with CygWin:
asc2svg.awk and the shell script to use: asc2svg
Note that the source file must be read twice.
